Fast Food Nation . . . if it were a Value Meal, it would definitely be a Number 2!
This movie is packed with an amazing ensemble cast of stars. Unfortunately though, they’re each only in the movie long enough to make some random social statement like…we mistreat illegal aliens and cows, kids should stay in school, single moms have it hard and that corporate America is corrupt (no…really?). In fact, if you asked any of the stars what this movie is really about, you’d probably get a different answer form all of them. This movie tries so hard to make a bunch of statements that is actually doesn’t get any point across. Mixed in with the social commentary is a weak story. It’s kinda about a group of illegal aliens that cross into the U.S. and are forced to work in a slaughter house while Greg Kinnear plays a corporate executive working for a fast food empire who half-heartedly investigates reports of contaminated beef.
While we certainly appreciate a movie with a message, Fast Food Nation’s story is too weak and the issues it addresses are too mainstream already. So, in spite of its tremendous star power, the movie is more irritating than it is eye-opening or entertaining. However, the graphic and disgusting “meat processing” scenes are sure to affect virtually anyone’s taste for beef and fine leather. So, while it may be a great way to induce vomiting for poison victims, Fast Food Nation is not a movie any will enjoy seeing.
